In a recent issue of “On Investing” by the Charles Schwab Company, Robert Reischauer was interviewed about what to expect from Social Security in the future. While some work-at-home plans may be legitimate, many are not. Home-employment schemes are one of the oldest classified-advertising frauds. Con artists can be found everywhere and market their products through direct mail, in magazines, and over the Internet, among other places. As you have found, entrepreneurs are being bombarded daily about “extraordinary business opportunities” through mass mailings, classified ads, seminars, informational demonstrations, telemarketing, TV and radio infomercials, and trade show booths. The problem is separating the legitimate ventures from the outright scams.

The offers are usually too good to be true and contain statements like, “Make easy money, even while watching television in your own home! Make money so fast you can hardly count it… have the time, freedom, and money that most people never have working for someone else! Accept this exclusive invitation… only a limited number of men and women in this area will be allowed to share in this exciting business opportunity… make people line up and beg you to take their money.”

Key words and phrases found in most of this type of advertising usually promise a thriving market that will bring extraordinarily high returns for very little investment or effort almost immediately.

Look for these tip-offs to fraudulent work-at-home schemes: Promises of un-realistically high profits; claims of a high market with great demand for the product or service; the “no experience is necessary” statement and the “exclusive invitation” offer.

A common scheme is an advertisement that entices entrepreneurs to pay a high fee to receive information that usually can be found, free of charge, in any public library.

State and federal regulators report that the largest categories of fraudulent or troublesome enterprises involve the following:

- The purchase and installation of coin-operated machines.

They urge you to act quickly¡ªtoday¡ªbecause your opportunity might vanish or it might, in their words, “cost you more each day you delay.” Some companies have organized home-based business associations that make their activities appear like friendly nonprofit support systems.

Their advertisements and infomercials tout glowing success stories, but typically very few consumers who purchase their business opportunities earn a substantial income or even recoup the costs of the upfront investment. Money-back guarantees may or may not be honored, and in most situations continued company support is nonexistent.

First, ask specific questions about what you will be responsible for and how you will get paid and by whom. Ask what supplies, equipment, or membership fees are required. Specify that you want these answers in writing.

Next, ask for a copy of the presale disclosure document. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires that sellers of business opportunities, including franchises, provide information on 20 items, including names and phone numbers of other franchisers. Ask your business attorney, accountant, or both to review this contract and answer questions you have about the details of the agreement.

Then ask for the names of others who have purchased the company’s home-based business opportunity. Be aware that the names the company gives to you might be insiders who work for the company. Therefore, personally check out their operations and observe them in action. Inquire about their annual sales and net sales. Ask if you can see their business records.

Continuing on my journey to discover the “10 Keys to Create Wealth” with Trivita’s Co-founder and CEO Michael Ellison and his book of the same title.

Last time, I shared my thoughts about the 1st key: Desire. This time around,  we’ll talk about the 2nd Key: Belief. Michael says right off the bat that ” it is necessary to reevaluate beliefs about wealth because those beliefs can either move you forward or hold you back.”

 

KEY #2: BELIEF

Since attending a Dani Johnson’s “First Steps to Success Seminar”, I have changed my belief about the role of money in my life. However reading about that subject, challenged my “money-notion” yet again.  

Growing up in an under-developed country and being among the priviledged few always made me feel guilty about money. And the fact that I grew up with strong religious beliefs didn’t help matter either: the references to the blessed poor and damned rich in the Bible left a strong impression.

What changed things around for me was to map my desire to be wealthy with the life purposes that wealth will allow me to fulfill; Such as giving my son a childhood rich in experiences and giving him the option to live the life he wants to not the one he has to; Such as founding and supporting organizations that take care of the street kids of Haiti: Providing education and health care for them. None of those things can be done without money.

Many misquote the Bible as saying that money is the root of all evil. Go look it up, 1 Timothy 6:10, it actually says “the love of money is the root of all evil“. In other words how we feel about money and the degree to which we put our trust in money is what determines whether money is good or bad.

What’s more God rewards his favored with wealth. Look at Abraham, David, Salomon, Joseph, they were all rich men.  Money can create a certain quality of life, money can heal marriages, provide health and education, broaden horizons…  

Michael challenges us that “rather than live by values and beliefs that you developed as a child or that resulted from societal influence, choose to live by intention, according to values and beliefs you fully embrace as an independent thoughful adult”.  

Use the following questions to test your belief about wealth:

1. Do you believe that wealth is mostly a matter of luck? Are you waiting for a lucky break?  Waiting to sponsor a master recruiter that will build your business for you or are you learning and investing in your education so you can be that master recruiter yourself?

2. Do you believe that most wealth is inherited? Let’s hope not. And I’ll leave it at that.

3. Do you believe God wants you to be wealthy? That was a challenging question for me at first.  But then it dawned on me: God would not put such desires in me if He wasn’t ready to provide the tools and the means to achieve them.

4. Do you believe that wealth is limited to only a narrow segment of the population? In other words do you have a scarcity mentality and an abundance mentality. Thankfully, no matter what you believe, wealth is not a limited natural resource.

5. Do you believe that YOU can build wealth? This is the most important of the five questions.  As Henry Ford puts it, “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, either way you’re right”.

In order to live a fulfilled life, your beliefs and values need to line up with your actions.

Micheal makes a great analogy with a ship on the ocean. “A ship has a propeller to create movement and a rudder to give direction. Your life’s propeller is comprised of actions that move you forward at a certain speed. Your life’s rudder is your set of beliefs and values that steer you in the direction you desire to go.”

If you don’t have deep desires rooted in strong purpose,your propeller is malfunctioning and  you will stall out in rough seas, if you don’t have clear beliefs and values, your rudder is broken and you will not stay on course.  

How does this apply to your business?

1) Do you believe that your business is the right business for you as you build wealth. If you have doubts about this, you will not do the things necessary to create a successful business.

List the key points about your business that make it the right one for you

2)Evaluate the products you offer. Do you truky believe that these products will help others? Back up your beliefs with solid evidence.

The bottom line is this: “What you believe determines your future”

When you first start thinking of owning your own business and for many the idea of working out of their homes is very appealing. With many get rich quick schemes online and offline, many times people get discouraged when they decide to make a go of it.

The very first thing to do is what is called due diligence. A sort of investigation of your favorite work at home. Even a company made up of well-educated high achievers can falter due to unpredictable market conditions, unforeseen competition, or technical setbacks. This is why one needs to be very observent in their quest for financial freedom by working for themselves at home.

One suggestion of marketing your new venture that comes with some security is a cooperative business model. You can have a growing community of business affiliates earning with business growth through cooperative marketing (a co op).

Look for a business that requires a small amount of start up capital versus the potential income the business can generate. You can leverage the efforts of other affiliates to build a significant business that normally would take an enormous amount of money and time before experiencing the returns.

Using cooperative marketing a business affiliate can grow a larger customer based business by each of the co op members doing a little. John paul Getty stated” I would rather have 100 percent of 100 people’s effort than 100 percent of one person.” This describes the co op concept well.

Look for a company with a good track record. Many start up companies offer you everything and very often fall flat. It is known that any business needs at least five years to prove it can stay affloat, especially in these trying economic times.

What Support will you have using a co op?

Depending on your choice of companies and group of individuals within that company that you pick to work with will determine the support you can expect once you start out. There may be a few co op members or many. Seek out some of the leaders and ask them for help and guidance.

You can create wealth and have success with the efforts of others all working together for one common goal. Your level of success will always depend on the amount of time you put into it. The help of others with a purpose and strong desire might be something that helps you more than you realize.

 

One of the most important ingredients a runner must stay informed about in his training is vitamins. This is even more so with the long-distance runner. A lot of iron is lost in sweat and urine. Vitamins are one thing in your diet a runner can control through proper nutrition.

You will be seeing the difference on time clocks at your next race.

It took me a long time to really understand this. If you miss very much of your training you’ll see slow times on race day. So by now you get to thinking why would you miss any training days?

Well that can be any number of a dozen different things. I use to never have enough time to get my runs in. However, I made the time because I knew it would show on the time clock! Some times I found myself running at lunch. Some times I ran after dark. Then sometimes I ran before work. I could always change my training days around if I needed to. This meant my long run might fall on a Saturday or a Sunday or a Tuesday.

Now we are down to why would you miss any of your training days? Of course! Sickness! Yes, that is how you would miss training days if you were sick with a cold or the flue or any number of things. I did forget one other thing that would cause you to miss a training day and that is injuries. But injuries are a whole other ball of wax we won’t talk about them today.

See you actually do have many reasons that could actually knock you off your schedule but we are runners and we keep on running! This is what it takes to be a competitive runner at any age group competition. We get to the part here about vitamins and running. There’s no question running will deplete you of vitamins so we will watch our diet and stay in charge of that.

Some of my favorite snacks are apricots. They are rich in iron. You can loose a lot of iron in your long runs. Another one is wheat germ. You can sprinkle that on your cereal in the mornings. Cashew nuts and liver those are just a couple more. Runners know it’s easy to loose too much weight too fast. That’s why we must make it a habit to weight every morning. If you are down more than three pounds than the previous day then you have lost too many fluids. Drink up!
